About

Welcome to Law & Place! I’m delighted to have you join me in exploring the intricate relationship between law and the places in which we live, work, and interact with one another. Through this platform, I aim to provide a space for open and intellectual discussion about the many ways in which the law shapes, and is shaped by, the physical and social environments we inhabit.

With a focus on topics such as public space, nature, transport, beneficial ownership and social mobility, Law & Place seeks to investigate the interplay between the legal and spatial factors that shape the world around us.

My hope is that by fostering dialogue and exchange among a diverse community of scholars, practitioners, and others interested in the intersection of law and place, we can contribute to a better understanding of the ways in which our legal systems can better serve our communities and promote a more just and sustainable future.

I am a Professor of Law at the University of Oxford and a Fellow and Tutor in Law at St. Anne’s College, Oxford. I teach Land, Constitutional and Administrative law as well as Regulation and a seminar on Feminist Public Space. I supervise research in urban, planning, environmental and property law as well as in legal geography. I have previously worked at the universities of UEA, UCL, Exeter, Cardiff, Birmingham and Bristol. I was a non-executive director of the fantastic street play organisation, Playing Out (from 2017-2020), and am a Trustee of the brilliant Ardagh Trust in Bristol.
